With 3 births already recorded in 2026, visitors can now witness the very first moments in the lives of these adorable young primates.

After a gestation period of around five and a half months, each female gives birth to a single infant between spring and early summer. This timing gives the young macaques the best possible conditions to grow before their first winter.

As every year, births take place quietly during the night, high up in the trees and away from visitors’ eyes. Early each morning, the park’s nature guides are delighted to discover the newest arrivals. It is always a special moment, both for the park team and for visitors.

Recognisable by their black fur and tiny pink faces, the baby macaques quickly capture everyone’s attention. During their first weeks of life, they remain safely attached to their mothers, first beneath their belly and later riding on their backs before gradually exploring their surroundings.

Dedicated Fathers

The birth season is also the perfect opportunity to observe one of the most remarkable behaviours of Barbary macaques: the important role played by the males.

Highly involved, males carry, protect and groom the infants, even when they are unlikely to be their own offspring. Behind this surprising “fatherly” behaviour lies an important social strategy: babies act as social mediators, helping strengthen relationships between the males of the group.

The First Adventures

Over the coming weeks, visitors will have the pleasure of watching the young macaques take their first hesitant steps before discovering their playful side through climbing, jumping and spectacular acrobatic games.

Did You Know?

🐵 A newborn Barbary macaque weighs around 600 grams.

🖤 During the first six weeks, its fur is completely black.

🥛 It feeds exclusively on its mother’s milk during this period.

❤️ The entire group helps care for the infants, making Barbary macaques one of the primate species with the richest social behaviour.

Come and Meet This Year’s First Baby Barbary Macaques

The first baby Barbary macaques are now visible at Monkey Forest.
